“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” — Psalm 26:3
This beautiful promise of perfect peace becomes a reality only when we meet its condition: choosing to trust in God.
If there is perfect peace, then there must also be an imperfect peace. Imperfect peace doesn’t mean no peace—it simply means it comes from sources that cannot last. It’s the kind of peace that depends on circumstances, emotions, or distractions. It soothes for a moment but never truly satisfies.
Your career, entertainment, comfort eating, sleeping to escape sadness, exercise, sex, friends, even your spouse—these may offer temporary relief or a moment of calm. But they cannot offer perfect peace.
Only a mind fixed on God can experience that kind of deep, whole, unshakable peace that nothing in this world can imitate.
So how do we keep our minds stayed on Him?
Scripture and the writings of inspiration give us the answer:
“By beholding, we become changed.”
“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
Ellen White writes:
“It would be well to spend a thoughtful hour each day reviewing the life of Christ from the manger to Calvary. We should take it point by point and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones of His earthly life. By thus contemplating His teachings and sufferings, and the infinite sacrifice made by Him for the redemption of the race, we may strengthen our faith, quicken our love, and become more deeply imbued with the spirit which sustained our Savior.”
— Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 374
To behold Jesus is to keep your mind on Him.
Look at His life.
See how He suffered and wrestled with temptation.
See how Satan tormented Him, yet He stood firm.
See Him agonizing in Gethsemane beneath the crushing weight of our sin.
See Him bleeding on the cross, choosing to save us at unimaginable cost.
When you take time to behold Christ, doubt loses its power. You will have no reason to question His love, no reason to question His care, and no reason to hesitate placing your trust—fully and confidently—into His hands.
So when worries begin to overwhelm you…
Pause.
Lift your eyes.
And imagine Jesus standing over you—calm, strong, compassionate.
Nothing is too hard for Him.
Whatever concerns come to mind right now, give them to the One who carried the world on His shoulders.
As the song says:
“If He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders,
I know, my brother and sister… He will carry you.”
